Everything you need to know about Microneedling

What is Micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a minimally invasive procedure that stimulates the skin's natural collagen and elastin production. Tiny sterile needles puncture the skin creating controlled micro-injuries in the epidermis and dermis; promoting the body's natural healing process.

How did we find out about Micro-needling?

The idea behind micro-needling can be traced all the way back to ancient acupuncture techniques from 100 BC. Fast forward to 1905, German Dermatologist Ernst Kromayer was the first to record his technique for micro-needling using a small surgical drill with various sized dental burs. Dr. Kromayer used micro-needling to help heal scar tissue and hyperpigmentation. Ninety years later, an American Doctor, Desmond Fernandes treated wrinkling and scar tissue by stamping hypodermic needles into the skin. Since then, micro-needling has been used across many doctors, dermatologists and skin practitioners.

How does Micro-needling work?

Micro-needling works by creating controlled micro-injuries between 0.25mm-2.5mm deep in the layers of the skin with tiny sterile needles, promoting the body's natural healing process. When a micro-injury is created in the skin, it forces the production of collagen, elastin and protein fibers; everything your skin needs to properly heal itself. When the production of collagen and elastin occur, it gives the skin a healthier and more youthful appearance by smoothing fine lines, lightening hyperpigmentation and plumping the skin. Essentially reversing any damage the skin may have experienced through out life.

Is all Micro-needling the same?

There are three different types of Micro-needling currently on the market today. Regular micro-needling, micro-needling with PRP and radiofrequency micro-needling. Regular micro-needling only involves the micro-needling tool and a "slip" to help the tool glide across the face and penetrate product deeper into the skin. The type of slip used varies from pure hyaluronic acid to a mixture of ingredients depending on what your skin needs. This is the most common and least invasive form of micro-needling. Micro-needling with PRP, also known as the vampire facial; involves drawing blood, spinning it, separating the platelet rich plasma from the blood (PRP) and using the PRP as the slip during the micro-needling session. Radiofrequency micro-needling is the most invasive form of micro-needling because it combines two procedures in one; radiofrequency and micro-needling. These two work together to penetrate deeper into the skin causing a unique micro-injury incorporating heat from the radiofrequency.

Should you get Micro-needling done?

If you experience wrinkling from aging, scarring from acne, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks or lax skin and you want to smooth the texture of your skin, brighten your skin, plump your skin and shrink the size of your pores then YES, you should get micro-needling done! However, if you have a weakened immune system, bleeding/blood clotting disorders, form keloids easily, taking Accutane (currently or within the past year) or you are pregnant, you should NOT get micro-needling done.

How do you prepare for a Micro-needling session?

If you decide you want to get micro-needling done, you should get prepared a few days in advance to make sure your appointment goes just as it should. If you are using any retinol/retinA, BHA/AHA or vitamin C products, you should discontinue the use of those products at least three (3) days before your appointment. Continue using sunscreen and avoid any direct UVA/UVB exposure at least three (3) days before your appointment as well. If you currently have a sunburn, wait until it heals completely before getting micro-needling done. If you get botox or fillers, you should get them two weeks before you plan on doing micro-needling. You should also plan for at least one to two days of down time following your procedure.

How long does it take to see results from Micro-needling?

Once you get your first session of micro-needling done, you will start to see results immediately and for up to six months after the initial procedure. Immediately after, your skin will look and feel sunburnt. This is to be expected and is how you know blood cells are being brought up to start the healing process. After the first day and up until the third day, your skin may stay red but will go away after the third day. After a week, your skin will look brighter and feel more hydrated. After two weeks you should notice an improvement in the texture and plumpness of your skin. It is recommended to have micro-needling done every 6 weeks for the best results. If you have deep wrinkling or severe scarring, it may take up to 6 (or more) sessions every 6 weeks to see a complete change in the skin.
