Everything you need to know about Dermaplaning

 What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is the mechanical exfoliation of the skin and hair removal using a surgical grade blade.

How does Dermaplaning work?

Dermaplaning works by "shaving" the top layer of skin off of the face using a quick, short sweeping motion. The sweeping motion from the sharp blade lifts dead skin, cuts vellus hairs and encourages blood flow.

Does Dermaplaning make vellus hair grow back darker?

Thankfully this is a myth! It is a common misconception that shaving vellus hair makes it grow back darker and thicker. When you get dermaplaning done, the hair on your face will grow back just as soft and light as it was before.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

The key benefits of dermaplaning include sloughing off dead skin cells, removing vellus hair and promoting circulation. These benefits result in an over all brighter and smoother complexion.

Should you get Dermaplaning done?

If you have dull or flaky looking skin, have unwanted peach fuzz or want a smoother base for makeup application; YES you should get dermaplaning done! However, if you have any open sores/lesions, blood clotting disorders (taking blood thinning medications), taking Accutane (currently or within the past 6 months) or skin that is easily irritated by shaving; you should NOT get dermaplaning done.

Dermaplaning at home VS getting it done professionally?

The great thing about dermaplaning is you can easily do it yourself at home using hand held razors designed for dermaplaning. Dermaplaning at home can have similar results compared to getting it done professionally. However, blades found in local stores are much more dull compared to the blades used by professionals. When you get dermaplaning done by a professional, the skin is less likely to get irritated, inflamed or cut. Typically, dermaplaning with a professional is more thorough, safe and effective.

How do you prepare for Dermaplaning?

If you're planning on getting dermaplaning done, you only need to prepare a day or two in advance. If you are using any Retinol/RetinA, BHA/AHA or vitamin C products, you'll want to discontinue using those products for at least two days before your appointment. You will also want to make sure to avoid any UVA/UVB exposure and continue using sunscreen. Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized before your appointment will ensure your skin is not too fragile for the blade.

How long do results from Dermaplaning last?

Depending on the rate at which your hair grows and how long it takes your body to naturally build up more dead skin, the results from dermaplaning can last anywhere between one to two weeks. It is recommended to only get Dermaplaning done once every four weeks, allowing your skin proper time to fully recover before the next procedure.
