Everything you need to know about LED Light Therapy

 What is LED Light Therapy?

LED (Light Emitting Diode) light therapy is the use of different wavelengths of light; usually red or blue to treat acne, aging, pain and wounds.

How did we discover LED Light Therapy?

Originally known as photo therapy, LED light therapy was first put to use in the early 1900s by scientist Niel Finsen. Photo therapy was mainly used as pain management for patients struggling with arthritis and soft tissue injury. Through a century of clinical trials and research, it was found that not only did LED light therapy help heal tissue within the skin 50 times faster but it also helped to heal cosmetic ailments.

How does LED Light Therapy work?

LED light therapy works by delivering different wavelengths of light to the skin. These specific wavelengths penetrate through the layers of the skin to trigger fibroblasts which promote the production of collagen and elastin.

Red LED Light Therapy benefits

Red LED light therapy helps in more ways than one. We see the best results for wound healing and pain management with Red LED light therapy. Since red LED light therapy heals wounds faster through fibroblast activation, it also helps to smooth, tighten and plump the skin.

Blue LED Light Therapy benefits

Blue LED light therapy is mostly used for acne treatment because it helps to kill any p.acnes bacteria within the skin. Blue LED light therapy is also very effective with bringing down inflammation from acne pustules deep within the skin and/or surface pimples.

When do you see results from LED Light Therapy?

Depending on what you are treating with LED light therapy, you can see results anywhere from right after your initial treatment to a few weeks after a couple of treatments. Right after one treatment, you will notice your skin looks more dewy and feels softer. However it may take longer (up to 10 weeks) and more consistent treatments to see full results for acne, aging or pain.

How often should you do LED Light Therapy treatments?

If you are using an at home machine, most of them are safe for everyday use. Always check with the brand and the specific machine you have to see how often it recommends use before using it everyday. If you are getting LED light therapy treatments with a professional, keep in mind the lights will be stronger and more effective than an at home machine. Because of this, you won't need to do the treatments as often but your skin practitioner may require a treatment plan depending on your individual needs.

Can LED Light Therapy cause cancer?

Thankfully, this is a common misconception with LED Light Therapy. There is no found cause of cancer from LED light therapy because the light is delivered through wavelengths instead of UVA/UVB rays. The lights used in LED light therapy machines are not the same as lights used in tanning beds.

Should you start LED Light Therapy?

If you struggle with acne, dull/lax skin, pain or open wounds and you want to heal your skin as fast as possible; YES you should start doing LED light therapy! However, if you are pregnant, epileptic, have a photo-allergy or are taking any medications that cause sensitivity to light; you should not start LED light therapy.

How do you prepare for a LED Light Therapy treatment?

The only thing you need to do to prepare to receive LED light therapy treatment is to make sure your skin is clean and free of any product before your appointment. This helps the light penetrate the skin as much as possible without being blocked by debris or product.
