Everything you need to know about High Frequency

 What is High Frequency?

High frequency occurs when radio frequency electromagnetic waves; also known as radio waves, range between 3 and 30 megahertz. When used in skin care, High Frequency glass electrodes are used to conduct Argon and Neon gas. These gasses are delivered to the skin through the electrodes and promote the production of collagen, elastin and protein fibers with gentle zaps.

How did we find out about High Frequency?

In 1891, Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla coil and used it to produce high frequency for medicinal purposes like wound healing. One year later a French biophysicist, Jacques-Arsene d’Arsonval, used high frequency to treat diseases that occurred in the skin and mucus membranes. After this breakthrough, many doctors, dermatologists and skin practitioners have used high frequency for a range of purposes.

What are the benefits of High Frequency?

Since the discovery of high frequency, it has been used for rapid healing in the skin and mucus membranes. You can use high frequency to help speed up the healing of burns, fever blisters and acne. High frequency has also been shown to significantly reduce bacteria in the skin that causes/worsens acne.

When do you see the results from High Frequency?

Since High Frequency promotes the healing process, based on what you're treating, you can see results from high frequency within days of the treatment up to two weeks after.

Should you get High Frequency done?

If you struggle with acne, need to promote healing in your skin from burns or sores and you want to increase oxygen and circulation to the skin then YES! you should get high frequency done. However, if you are immune compromised, pregnant or have any metal implants, you should not get high frequency done.

How do you prepare for High Frequency?

Before receiving high frequency you should stop/avoid using any AHA/BHA, vitamin C or RetinA/Retinol products for at least a few days. When receiving high frequency, you want to make sure your skin is clean and dry. You can apply a toner before doing high frequency to help the product penetrate deeper into the skin. After you've received high frequency, continue avoiding strong chemical exfoliants for at least two days as it can irritate and potentially burn the skin. Keep your skin clean, moisturized and protected with SPF everyday after a high frequency treatment.

How often should you implement High Frequency into your routine?

If you are using an at home high frequency machine, you can potentially implement it into your daily routine. However, with any new device you should always give your skin time to react after first time use. For beginners, it is safe to do high frequency at home once or twice a week. If your skin reacts well, you can slowly increase how often you use it and eventually you may be able to use it everyday. When it comes to professional use, you could implement high frequency with any facial or you can also add it on after a service like waxing to help with inflammation and ingrown hairs.

High Frequency at home VS High Frequency with a professional

Technology in the skin care industry has advanced a lot since high frequency was first put to use. Because of this, a lot of things that you can get at a professional skin practitioners office, you can most likely find a device that allows you to do it from home. There are many different kinds of at home high frequency machines that are great for every day use. However, keep in mind that devices made for at home use are significantly weaker compared to machines in a professional office. This is a safety precaution and allows for everyday use.
